Octavo, [x], 269pp. Maroon cloth, title stamped on spine. Stated “first edition” on copyright page. Dampstain to top edge of rear cover, with limited impact to top quarter of text block. Generally clean text, solid text block. In the publisher’s exceptionally scarce dust jacket, retail price of $2.50 on rear flap, clipped upper corner of front flap, dampstain to rear panel and spine, shallow chipping to spine, bright illustrations. A presentable copy of this exceptionally scarce first edition by Thomas Savage.

This first novel by Thomas Savage (1915-2003) is set along the Montana-Idaho border, an exploration of Western ranching that would become a theme in many of the author’s works. He would follow The Pass with acclaimed novels such as The Power of the Dog and The Sheep Queen. This scarce first edition can only be found in a handful of institutions, with no record of copies in the dust jacket appearing on the market.
