Early edition of General Surgical Pathology and Therapeutics by Theodor Billroth, from the library of Dr. Harriette O. McCalmont, a prominent Michigan suffragette.

Octavo, xvi, 835pp, [4pp ads], 8pp ads. Full sheep binding, with title in gilt on black morocco label affixed to spine. A solid text block, with some wear and rubbing to edges. Sunning to spine. Featuring over 150 woodcuts throughout text. Signed by Harriette O. McCalmont on the front free endpaper, with previous ownership stamps at front and rear of text.

Inscription on front flyleaf reads “Harriette O. McCalmont / Woman’s Medical College / Philadelphia, Pa.” After graduating from medical school in 1891, McCalmont worked as head of the women’s department at a state hospital in Pennsylvania. She later moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan to work in a similar position at their state hospital. McCalmont, an outspoken suffragette, also served as president of the Equal Suffrage Association of Kalamazoo and earned the highest majority vote given to a woman for a seat on the local school board. The Woman’s Medical College in Philadelphia, founded in 1850, was the second medical school in the world established to train and help women earn the M.D. degree.
