After graduating from medical school in 1891, Harriette McCalmont worked as head of the women’s department at a state hospital in Pennsylvania. She later moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan to work in a similar position at their state hospital. McCalmont, an outspoken suffragette, also served as president of the Equal Suffrage Association of Kalamazoo and earned the highest majority vote given to a woman for a seat on the local school board.
