Description

The first edition of Black Reconstruction by W.E.B. Du Bois from Russell Scholars’ Classics, published in 1956, in the publisher’s scarce dust jacket.

Octavo, [8], 746pp. Black cloth, title printed in silver on spine. No additional printings mentioned on copyright page. Dust along edges of text block, light soiling to endpapers. In the publisher’s dust jacket, chipping along edges, closed tears to spine, archival tissue repair to hinge of spine, a scarce jacket with noted condition issues.

The first edition of Black Reconstruction was published by Harcourt, Brace and Company of New York in 1935. While not widely read by historians upon it’s release in 1935, scholars began to reevaluate the book in the 1970’s, finding it “the foundational text of revisionist African American historiography.” (Bilbija, 2011)
