The first edition of Black Reconstruction was published by Harcourt, Brace and Company of New York in 1935. While not widely read by historians upon it’s release in 1935, scholars began to reevaluate the book in the 1970’s, finding it “the foundational text of revisionist African American historiography.” (Bilbija, 2011)
