Vice Admiral Joseph F. Bolger, USN, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy and served in the Atlantic Fleet during World War I. During World War II, he commanded the fleet carrier USS Intrepid (CV-11), earning two Navy Crosses for his service. Post-war, he became the commissioning commanding officer of the USS Midway (CVB-41). He retired in 1953 with the rank of Vice Admiral and died in 1985.
