A scarce work on the religious traditions within the Confederate Army of the United States, by General R.E. Lee’s chaplain, the Revered J. William Jones, D.D. From Eicher, “the author explores the religious spirit of the Confederate armies at the onset of the war, the influence of good Christian officers (focusing on Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee, and Stonewall Jackson), the work to secure and distribute bibles among the soldiers, hospital work and the roles of chaplains and missionaries, and the eagerness of the soldiers to hear the gospel.” This work was published simultaneously with another edition of the book in 1887, with the same title and publisher, but omits p. 529-624 (Dornbusch III, 737). No priority established.
