First edition of El Indio by Gregorio Lopez y Fuentes.

Octavo, 256pp. Yellow cloth, title in brown on spine and front cover. Stated “First Edition” on copyright page. Solid text block, bumped corners, light toning to top edge, faint marks along spine, a near fine example. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, $2.50 retail price on front flap, small chips to corners, soiling to spine, with vibrant red details and clear illustrations. A scarce, near fine example. Includes ten illustrations by Diego Rivera and two full-page photos.

Gregorio Lopez y Fuentes (1897-1966) was one of the most important chroniclers of the Mexican Revolution. His writings began simply as novels, but he grew in popularity as he pulled from his own experiences during the Revolution. He was awarded the National Prize of Arts and Sciences in 1935. Diego Rivera (1886-1957), known for his influence in establishing the Mexican mural movement, occasionally translated his Cubism and Post-Impressionism styles into smaller-scale illustrations for texts like El Indio.
