U.S. Navy officer John A. Dahlgren (1809-1870) founded the Navy’s Ordnance Department, aiding in the creation of the Navy’s own foundry to produce equipment. Dahlgren also made improvements to weapons, specifically a cast-iron muzzle-loading cannon that increased range and accuracy.
Senator Henry Lodge Cabot (1850-1924) and his Lodge Reservations were the primary factors in stopping the United States from joining the League of Nations. His concern with the maintenance of American sovereignty in international defense systems led to the establishment of veto power in the United Nations Security Council today.
