Description
Presidential briefing on Operation Uphold Democracy at the White House on September 19, 1994, photograph signed by former President Jimmy Carter, Senator Sam Nunn, General Colin Powell and President Bill Clinton.
This color photograph was taken by White House photographer Bob McNeely in the White House Residence Treaty Room, during a “working breakfast meeting” on the situation in Haiti. Also in attendance at the meeting were President Jean-Bertrand Aristide, Vice President Al Gore, Tony Lake and Leon Panetta. This meeting was followed by a press conference the same day. Photograph is signed in the border along the bottom and measures 8″ x 10″.
A fine piece, capturing an important diplomatic victory for the Clinton Administration and former President Jimmy Carter.
Operation Uphold Democracy was in response to the 1991 Haitian coup d’état, where the democratically elected President Jean-Bertrand Aristide was deposed by Army General Raoul Cédras. In 1994, a delegation led by former President Jimmy Carter, along with Senator Sam Nunn and General Colin Powell, urged Provisional President Émile Jonassaint and General Cédras to relinquish control or face an invasion by the 82nd Airborne Division. President Aristide returned to power in October 1994, with a UN peacekeeping force remaining in Haiti until 2000.
