Ashton Carter (1954-2022) served as the United States Secretary of Defense from 2015-2017. During his time as Secretary of Defense, Carter fought for equality by ending the ban on transgender military officers and opening all military occupations to women, including infantry, armor and special operations units. William J. Perry (b. 1927), the co-author of this book, was Secretary of Defense from 1994-1997 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1997.
