Description
First edition, first issue of Ranch Life and the Hunting-Trail by Theodore Roosevelt, in the publisher’s exceptionally scarce dust jacket.
Quarto, [x], 186pp, [4]. Moderate yellow buckram, olive green and gilt decorative stamping. Title stamped in gilt on spine. Cover design by George Wharton Edwards. All edges gilt, plain endpapers. Light rubbing to top quarter of cloth, some offsetting to endpapers from dust jacket. Fully illustrated by Frederic Remington. Housed in a custom brown morocco clamshell, title in gilt on spine. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, tan paper, cover design of the book repeated in brown and green lettering, chipping at spine, conservative archival repair to spine, chip along top edge, a very good example. (Howes R432) (Rader 2830) (Cole & Vail, A10a)
Exceptionally rare to find a first state of Ranch Life, in the publisher’s original dust jacket. Only 2 other known copies, in dust jacket, have appeared at auction.
The first issue of Ranch Life and the Hunting-Trail is identical to the second issue, except for the colors of the front cover illustration by George Wharton Edwards. The second issue is decorated with deep brown colors, as opposed to olive green and gold on the first issue.
