Signed on the front free endpaper months before his death in 1914. Inscription reads: “Hon. George A. San_ and Mrs. San_, with kindest regards of their friend / Adlai E. Stevenson / Bloomington, Ill / Jany 12th, 1914.” An exceptionally rare signed book from Vice President Adlai E. Stevenson.
Adlai Stevenson (1835-1914) served as the 23rd Vice President of the United States, in the second administration of Grover Cleveland. He ran for Vice President on the William Jennings Bryan ticket of 1900, but Bryan lost to William McKinley. Stevenson was the father of Lewis G. Stevenson, the Illinois Secretary of State (1914-1917) and his grandson, Adlai Stevenson II, ran for President of the United States in 1952 and 1956.
