First edition of Speeches and Addresses by William McKinley, with a presentation inscription by the future president.
Octavo, vi, 664pp, [2pp ads]. Blue cloth, title in gilt on spine and front panel. Frontispiece portrait of William McKinley, with four additional engraved plates, all with tissue covers and light foxing. Yellow endpapers, front hinge starting, solid text block. Rubbing to tips, wear to head of spine, clean cloth boards.
Inscribed on the front flyleaf: “Very truly yours, W. McKinley / To Dewitt Mullen Esq / Phila Pa / Columbus, O / Dec 14/93.”
This book was inscribed by Gov. William McKinley in 1893, while serving as the 39th Governor of Ohio. With President Grover Cleveland unlikely to seek a third presidential term, McKinley was mentioned as the likely republican candidate for the presidency in 1896.
