First edition of Statistics of South Carolina by Robert Mills, published in 1826, with the scarce map of South Carolina.
Octavo, [half-title], [map], [i]-x, [17] – 782pp, 47pp, [errata]. Original boards, beige cloth spine, title on paper label affixed to spine. Uncut fore edge. Previous ownership notation in pencil on front endpaper and half-title. Soiling to covers and notable wear to boards. Some wear to hinges, heavy foxing to front and rear portions of text. Housed in custom brown cloth chemise, title on brown morocco label on spine. (Sabin 49118) (Howes M627) (Pilling 2589) This work is compete with the map and folding table, both rebacked with linen. This early map of South Carolina was published by F. Lucas Jr. in Baltimore, for Mills’ Atlas & Statistics. The table was previously torn, with archival repairs to hinges and backed with linen.
Robert Mills (1781-1855) was an architect from South Carolina and designer of the Washington Monument in Washington, DC. Mills was approached by the General Assembly of South Carolina in 1823 to produce an atlas of the state, specifically the states twenty-eight political districts. He completed the Atlas of the State of South Carolina in 1825 (Howes M625), and it’s companion volume, Statistics of South Carolina, in 1826.
