The 2006 Palestinian election saw the first Hamas candidates elected to national government, a dramatic shift from previous democratic elections. When The Carter Center agreed to monitor the 2006 Palestinian Elections, it was the third time the organization had agreed to do so.
On the election of Hamas candidates, President Carter said: “Although there is now some justified trepidation about the involvement of candidates from Hamas, we are hopeful that, despite severe restrictions on voting in East Jerusalem and movement within the West Bank, the election process will be peaceful and another demonstration of the Palestinians’ commitment to democracy.”
