Suzanne Collins was inspired to write The Hunger Games from the myth of Theseus; the story of a boy who volunteered to fight the Minotaur to end the repeated human sacrifices to said monster. The Hunger Games trilogy includes Catching Fire (2009) and Mockingjay (2010). All three books were adapted into major motion pictures five years after it’s initial publication, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Woody Harrelson. The Hunger Games series expanded in 2020 with Collins’ publication of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, a prequel detailing the coming-of-age of series antagonist Coriolanus Snow. This novel was adapted into a film in 2023, which has grossed over 250 million dollars worldwide.
