Description

First edition, first printing of The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway, a near fine example.

Octavo, 140pp. Light blue cloth binding with title in silver on spine. First edition with Scribner’s “A” on copyright page. Previous ownership inscription on front endpaper. Rubbing to silver gilt on spine, faint soiling to covers. In the publisher’s first state dust jacket, $3.00 on front flap, with no mention of Nobel Prize on the rear panel. A very good jacket, with light sunning to top quarter of spine, short closed tear top edge of rear panel, faint ring mark on back panel, a bright example. Housed in custom clamshell case, blue cloth, title in gilt over blue leather label. (Hanneman 24a).

This book was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953 and is considered one of the most important novels of the 20th century.
