Small octavo, 301pp, [2pp ads], 32pp publisher’s ads dated March 1898. Green cloth, title in gilt on spine. No additional printings listed on copyright page. Contains nine additional stories from the first American edition in Part II: Midnight Sketches. Solid text block, dust remnants to top edge, wear to corners and spine. Front and rear endpapers cracked, but binding sound. A very good example. (Williams & Starrett 16)
Stephen Crane (1871-1900) was a young American writer known for The Red Badge of Courage, along with various other poems and short stories. The Open Boat is one of Crane’s most popular short stories, one which H.G. Wells called “beyond all question, the crown of all [Crane’s] work.”
