Inscribed on the front free endpaper: “To Bill _, With Best Wishes, Joe McCarthy.” This work was followed by America’s Retreat from Victory, a well researched and controversial critique of George C. Marshall and Dean Acheson.
Senator Joe McCarthy (1908-1957) of Wisconsin was made famous by his attempts to identify communist subversion in the United States. His aggressive tactics led to his eventual censure by the United States Senate, and in turn a rapid decline in his health. He died at the age of 48 in 1957.
