The first edition of Unwritten History of Slavery: Social Science Source Documents, No. 1, published in 1945 by Fisk University. This scarce work was reissued in 1968 by Microcard Editions.

Quarto, v, 322pp. Original brown wrappers, title print on cover, spine bound with orange cloth. Date on title page is covered with blue pen. Occasional marginalia throughout, with long “commentary” at the end of the preface. A scarce work, with no known copies appearing on the public market. OCLC identifies 17 copies in institutions.

This work was based on interviews by Ophelia Settle Egypt (1903-1984), a research assistant for black sociologist Charles S. Johnson at Fisk University. From 1928-1930, she conducted hundreds of interviews with formerly enslaved people. The interviews were compiled into this oral history, first published in this work in 1945.
