Octavo, xii, [2], 285pp. Black leather, title in gilt on spine, decorative gilt inlays, all edges gilt. Stated “first edition September 1966” on copyright page. Marbled endpapers. Housed in the publisher’s matching slipcase. Includes the library stamp of Hubert Humphrey on the half title.
This copy is inscribed on a special calligraphic presentation leaf: “This is a copy of a Special Limited Edition of Wings of the Tiger / presented to / The Honorable Hubert H. Humphrey / Vice President of the United States of America / A great patriot, a great American, Sincerely, Carl Krueger.”
Hubert Humphrey (1911-1978) served as the 38th Vice President of the United States, during the Johnson Administration. He was the Democratic Senator from Minnesota from 1949-1964, and again from 1971-1978. He was the Democratic nominee for president in 1968, losing to Richard Nixon. He was known as a staunch liberal in the United States Senate, but was admired by colleagues from across the political spectrum. He died from cancer in 1978. Another copy of the Signed Limited edition of Wings of the Tiger was presented to Gov. Ronald Reagan in 1966 and sold at his estate sale at Christie’s in 2016 (Lot 409).
